Description: 

Growing up in a home in which a parent has an eating disorder presents a unique set of challenges for the children. Along with the day-to-day struggles and secrecy of the disease, there are far-reaching implications for mental and emotional health that are not always easy to recognize. Utilizing a mixture of experience, therapeutic issues and approaches, and symbolic mythology as seen through common fairy tales, this workshop will address issues that arise from the experience as well as suggestions for helping clients work through their concerns.

 

Learning objectives: 

  Participants will be able to describe the emotional and mental challenges that arise from growing up in an eating disordered home 

Participants will be able to describe the phenomenon of “Reverse Object Relations” and the impact on the children 

Participants will be able to identify interventions that will help adult children of eating disordered parents 

Presenter:  Jim Seckman, M.Div., CMAC, CCS 

 

Jim Seckman, MDiv, CMAC, CCS has over 30 years experience in the field of addiction treatment in a variety of settings. He is currently a Counselor with Positive Impact, and has served as Spiritual Life Director, CEO, and Clinical Director of MARR, Executive Director of Breakthru House, Coordinator for Addiction Services at Emory Hospital, Clinical Coordinator for SAFE, President of GARR, and on the GACA Ethics Committee. Jim’s goal for training is to equip counselors with the insight and skills necessary to provide quality services to their clients.
