Talk about Sex!

Description:

Sexual Behavior Problems (PSB) cannot be controlled and this a phenomenon that is the next door neighbor to substance use and abuse problems. The sexual thoughts, urges, desires, and behaviors are excessive and without help, cannot be controlled. This course will educate the learner participant about what PSB is and how to support clients when they present with this. Learner participants are welcome to bring cases for staffing with the presenter and anonymity of actual client/patient names is requested for cases reviewed.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn about the pathology of Problematic Sexual Behaviors (PSB)
  2. Identify challenges faced by mental health counselors working with individuals living with PSB
  3. Describe Treatment Methods for PSB

Let’s Talk About Sex Ethically: Clients Deserve Better

Description:

As counselors, we strive to prepare clients for life without abusing substances, yet we repeatedly ignore that sex is an important part of life. The standard line about staying out of relationships for the first year clean might be helpful to keep clients single during treatment, but then they’re out on their own, attempting to engage in relationships that include sex. Many clients may not have had sex without being loaded for years, some decades. Clean time alone doesn’t magically prepare people for sex. It’s our ethical duty to give them the tools for negotiating sex. So let’s talk about sex & how to serve our clients more ethically.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Attendees will explore how the traditional view of communicating about sex during treatment negatively impacts the treatment provided.
  2. Attendees will learn a framework for negotiating sex based on consent & clear communication.
  3. Attendees will practice learned skills to be able to address sex with clients ethically.                                                                                                                                                   Presenter:  Lanny Ledford, LCSW, CSAT
In 2001 while traveling in Spain, I discovered “The Camino De Santiago” also referred to as the “The Way”. . . I walked the five hundred miles completing this life-changing experience which began my journey into becoming a therapist and starting the practice of helping others on their journey. My journey continued as I went on to earn an undergraduate and then master’s degree from the School of Social Work at the University of Georgia.
I pursued licensure and am currently a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (GA License # CSW004082) and have been practicing over the past two decades.
I gained experience in working with clients as they go through the legal/court system with addiction, anger management or domestic violence. As I moved into private practice, I began to work with mood disorders like anxiety and depression. I also started to focus on trauma being at the core of compulsive behavior that can lead to addiction.
While I have been specializing in pornography / sexual addiction, as well as complex trauma, I also work with clients experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder, betrayal trauma, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.
I am a Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist. I also have certifications in EMDR and TEAM CBT.
Reflecting back at my journey, I look at therapy like walking on the Camino. . . Starting on a life-changing journey, then walking side by side building a mutually respectful client-therapist relationship, offering guidance, expertise, and techniques in recovering from mental and behavioral struggles. . . then celebrating the healing, progress, change, and recovery as we walk along “The Way" one day at a time.
