Description:

“Unpacking Substance Use Disorder Assessment” is an 6-hour, in-depth workshop designed for licensed and certified mental health professionals who perform evaluations for individuals with substance use disorders. The workshop provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of the SUD assessment process, including screening, diagnosis, and treatment planning. Attendees will explore the DSM-5 criteria for substance use disorders, learn about the biopsychosocial factors influencing substance use, and gain skills in integrating culturally competent and ethical considerations into their evaluations.

Additionally, the program covers the use of psychological testing to assess the cognitive and emotional impacts of substance use. Through interactive case studies and small group activities, participants will practice applying assessment tools and developing treatment recommendations tailored to individual client needs. The workshop aims to enhance the skills of mental health professionals, enabling them to perform thorough and effective evaluations that inform treatment planning and improve client outcomes.

Learning objectives:

1. Identify the key components of a comprehensive SUD assessment and distinguish between screening and full evaluations.

2. Demonstrate knowledge of the DSM-5 criteria for diagnosing substance use disorders and apply these criteria in clinical practice.

3. Analyze biopsychosocial factors and co-occurring disorders that impact individuals with SUD.

4. Apply culturally competent and ethical practices when assessing clients with substance use issues.

5. Utilize psychological tests effectively within SUD assessments.

6. Develop treatment plans based on assessment findings and determine appropriate levels of care.

7. Engage in hands-on practice using case studies to integrate knowledge and skills acquired during the workshop.
